Put your nose in it

My mum used to ask me why it is that in order to drink out of a cup or mug, we have to put our noses inside. She wondered why no one ever thought of inventing cups that prevented your nose from taking a plunge. She considered the nose-in-the-cup experience one of the top ten most unhygienic things we have to deal with in life. Imagine all those germs we breathe into our drink before we slurp! I suggested she adopt the beaker, straw, carton or bottle, but quite indignantly, she reminded me that none of these would be much good with a mug of steaming hot chocolate. Maybe we could just hold our breaths and hope not to sneeze?
